Welcome UVA Class 2013

Welcome to the Jewish Students at UVa’s Class of 2013!  The whole summer we’ve been collecting names and meeting people at orientation, through word of mouth, on facebook, and summer bbq’s to see Hoos Jewish in this first year class. And there are tons of you!

Now, if we weren’t lucky enough to meet you at one of these venues….. you may be thinking, who are you? Well, we (Rabbi Shlomo & Channa) run Chabad House which has been at UVa for 8 years serving as an open, warm, non-judgmental Jewish family atmosphere that accepts all Jews no matter affiliation or level of observance. Labels are for T-shirts not for Jews!!  There are over 150 Chabad Houses on Campus throughout the world! We consider ourselves very lucky to be running social, educational, spiritual, and charitable activities at UVa. Thousands of UVa students have passed through our doors (which are conveniently located as close as possible to all first year dorms—just two blocks from the main dining hall- O’Hill) and we hope you’ll be one of them as well.  Chabad is also a campus recognized student organization with officers and the whole bit, but you don’t need to “join.” There are no members or membership fees. If you come once a semester or every week to an event you will be just as welcome as anyone and will be greeted with a smile. Our famous Shabbat dinners can attract more than 50 students for a home-cooked three course sumptuous meal.

Think of us as your extended (not so crazy) Jewish family on grounds.  If you’re sick—let us know—Chicken Noodle Soup will arrive. If you need to go somewhere and don’t have a ride—call or text us—we run all over the place all the time anyway!  And lastly, when you’re parents come to town—bring them by—we heart parents and families! Be on the lookout for our newsletter in the mail to your house.

So here’s what we’ve got coming up

Move-In Day Open House August 22 9:00am to 9:00pm—Top off all that moving and lifting with some Ice Cold Lemonade, cookies, and fresh fruit. We’ll be welcoming people at Chabad House all day on Move-In Day. Pop in for 5 or 50 min—just say hi! 2014 Lewis Mt Road (corner of Alderman and Lewis Mt.) Click here for map to Chabad House

Activities Fair Lunch Bunch--Monday August 24th 11am-2pm—Look for our table at the UVa activities fair for some yummy sandwiches. Say hi, have a bite and sign up for all the great programs we’ve got going on!

A Quick Taste of ShabbatFriday August 28th at 6:30pm in Tuttle Dorm Lounge(Alderman)--We know how busy the first Friday night can be—with all that “studying” in the library ;) So we’re bringing a quick taste of Shabbat to the dorms so you can pop in, meet some Jews, and pop out. OR if you’re not satiated by the Matza Ball Soup, & Brownies—follow a group of upperclassmen back from the dorms to Chabad House for the rest of Shabbat Dinner. Sponsored by Barbara & Brian Thum in Honor of their daughter Erica's ('13) birthday

Please let us know where you’ll be living at UVa by filling out this quick form! You don’t want to miss out on the High Holiday & Chanukah Treats we send out!

Wishing you the best of luck in your new school year,

Rabbi Shlomo & Channa Mayer
