About Us
What is Chabad at UVA?
Chabad at UVA serves as a home away from home for Jewish students on campus. It provides a welcoming and inclusive environment where students can connect with Jewish life in a meaningful and accessible way.
Whether attending a Shabbat dinner or stopping by during the week, students are welcomed into a space that emphasizes community, connection, and personal growth. The goal is to support each student in developing a relationship with Jewish tradition, values, and identity.
Chabad at UVA is committed to fostering a lasting connection to Judaism, the Jewish people, the Torah, and the Land of Israel.
All Jewish students are welcome, regardless of background or level of observance. There are no membership requirements or participation fees.
What Does “Chabad” Mean?
The word “Chabad” is an acronym for the Hebrew terms Chochmah, Binah, and Daat, meaning wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.
Chabad philosophy emphasizes both intellectual engagement and practical application. It teaches that every individual has inherent value and purpose, and that Jewish tradition offers a meaningful framework for daily life.
A Global Movement
Founded over 250 years ago, Chabad has grown into one of the largest Jewish outreach movements in the world. Today, thousands of Chabad centers operate globally, serving communities in a wide range of settings, including cities, small towns, and university campuses.
Each Chabad center is led by dedicated individuals who focus on building inclusive and supportive Jewish communities.
